Guatemala is small, comparable to a medium-sized US state, but incredibly diverse. The climate ranges from temperate in Guatemala City and Antigua, to desert, rainforest, chilly highlands, the hot and humid coastal plain, and everything in between. In addition to Spanish, 22 completely distinct local Mayan languages are spoken in the country. The various regions have their unique customs and styles of dress. The diversity makes the country fascinating, but the diversity isn’t always positive. Guatemala has a huge gap between rich and poor. While Guatemala City has modern buildings, tree-lined boulevards, and all the conveniences you could want, there are many towns where the people don’t have running water or enough food.
